Elaine Armfield-Guffey received her BA degree in dance from Butler University in Indianapolis,
Indiana. She did graduate work at New York University, the International School of Dance in Genoa, Italy
and with Melissa Hayden of New York City Ballet, receiving a MS degree from the University of Tennessee,
Knoxville. As a ballerina, she danced with Maryville-Alcoa Civic Ballet, Oak Ridge Civic Ballet, Atlanta
Ballet, Butler Ballet, and Tennessee Festival Ballet.
Since 1977, she has operated the Armfield Dance Academies in Athens, TN and Madisonville, TN.
A former dance instructor for the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and current dance
instructor for Pellissippi State, she has also received two Governor's Awards for Excellence in
Teaching Ballet.
Mrs. Guffey choreographs, directs, and stages full-length ballets and variety shows. In 1987 she
was invited to present her choreography in Copenhagen, Denmark and Moscow and Leningrad USSR. In 1995
the Armfield Dancers performed at Mexico's Fiesta Cancun, in 1997 toured Italy, in 1999 danced in Greece,
and in 2003 danced aboard a Carnival cruise ship. In summer 2006, they returned to Greece.
Elaine Armfield-Guffey is very proud to have served as president of the Tennessee Association
of Dance.
